During a student free day about a month ago, I was hanging about in my office when this guy came around wanting to photograph the new building my office is in.
He said he was working for the builder & needed to get some shots, but was waiting for some cloud so there would be less shadows.
As we waited, we got talking about chaplaincy, & he said he thought it was invaluable because "kids these days need all the help they can get."
I AM SICK OF PEOPLE TALKING LIKE THE YOUNGER GENERATION ARE EVIL!
Do they forget that they too were hormone ridden soul searchers not that long ago? Before they settled for a house, family & job they pretend to like. This isn't something new. It's been happening ever since Adam & Eve had a kid (speaking of which, who did Adam & Eve's kids marry?)
Of course some of them are little shits. But most of my bosses have been big shits. At every place I've worked there's been some people who annoy the buggery out of me.
But there is one thing that does annoy me about young people, and it's the same thing that annoys me about all people. Most people are stuck in a life that isn't fulfilling & is making so little a difference to the world it's killing them. We get up, put our masks on, and "work jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need." (T. Durden et al. 1999, Fight Club) Then we go home, so tired & depressed from work that we don't have the energy to do anything about the real issues in the world. Instead we watch sport, MasterChef or some crappy sitcom to escape ourselves. And every now & then we'll watch something like Fight Club or American Beauty & get that feeling like we're better that everyone else.
The difference is young people see this for what it is, & take it to the extreme with things like 'planking'. Planking is the youth's critique of how shallow a life we are offering them.
Young people are still working out who they are. Let's give them the time, space & support they need to imagine a world better than we've come up with.
Thus endith my rant.
wow...you've been hanging on to this rant for a month then? Or did something else trigger it?
ReplyDeleteI'm always walking around with rants going in my head. This morning I made a list of rants I'd like to cover in future blogs.
ReplyDeleteBut I don't want to release 20 at the same time, cause no one would read them. But if I go with one a month, that is much more manageable.
